GMC Update

General Medical Council Registration

Please note that to work as an RMO in the private sector in the UK, you need to be eligible for full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK. If you are eligible, and have applied for a post with us, we will assist you with your registration.

The following information is provided for doctors wishing to organise their GMC registration directly. Whilst we have taken all care to ensure that the information is up to date and accurate, we take no responsibility for the information provided and advice given.

Please note: If your qualification requires you to write the full PLAB test, we cannot assist you in obtaining a RMO post

Are my Qualifications acceptable for direct GMC registration?

All non-European Economic Area (EEA) doctors who wish to register with the GMC typically follow one of two routes as detailed below: To see whether your university qualifies for Route 1 (PLAB exempt) registration, please check via the GMC website.

Route 1: Broadly, doctors qualified from South Africa (except Medunsa who fall into route 2), Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong and the University of the West Indies medical schools have to write the IELTS exam. This can be organised via the local British Council or Consulate and costs around £80.

To organise the IELTS test, please see (http://www.ielts.org/) or consult your local office (see below for details) who will assist you in registering for the relevant examination.

Route 2: All non-EEA doctors who did not qualify from the above universities need to exactly as per route 1 but are also obliged to write the PLAB clinical examination.

This is covered in more detail on the PLAB section.

What is the IELTS test?

Since January 1999, it has been a condition of being granted full GMC registration that all applicants who qualified overseas would be required to pass a standard test of competence in English. Competence is measured by sitting the Academic Module of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

All non-EEA doctors are required to sit this examination irrespective of whether the doctor graduated from a medical school where English is the language of instruction. The British Council administers the IELTS test in over 105 countries around the world. This means that most centres have a testing session at least once a month and more frequently when necessary.

How do I book the IELTS test ?

Doctors should contact their nearest test centre for details of examination dates, fees, etc. Doctors whose IELTS Test Report Form is more than two years old are required to re-take the test.

Please see the IELTS website at http://www.ielts.org/ for sample test past papers and details of your nearest test centre.

GMC Documentation

For doctors who have applied for RMO substantive posts with Cape Medical, we will assist you throughout the GMC registration process.

If you wish to register directly yourself, you will need the following documentation:

  • Completed GMC application form (obtainable from the GMC)
  • Money in form of international money draft (i.e. cheque)
  • Your IELTS certificate (English exam results if you do not already hold provisional registration)
  • Your original medical degree or a certified extract letter from the university stating that you qualified MBCHB on a particular date (this letter must be in English, on official university stationery and have the university stamp or seal)
  • Proof of full registration as a medical practitioner (or references certifying completion of approved/satisfactory internship)
  • Certificate of Good Standing: An original Certificate of Good Standing from your regulatory body (i.e. health council) in the country where you are primarily registered and currently practicing.

Please ensure that you courier the documents (we use Federal Express, DHL, Skynet) as they are reputable and will be able to track the progress of your item. Also, please ensure that only original documents are sent to the GMC - photocopies are not acceptable.

For your registered address, you can use either use your home address or our office address as this is the address all your documentation is returned to (some people prefer to use an office address as the GMC registration details are publicly accessible information).

Processing of applications takes approximately 1-2 weeks from date of couriering (except in July and December/January when applications may take longer due to all the UK doctors registering) and progress can be checked via telephone +44 207 344 3984 or +44 207 3624. Alternatively, you may wish to courier all documentation to our office and we can process the application on your behalf.

We are happy to advise on your progress at any stage and hope that this information is of benefit.
